Pekanbaru-(Riauterbit.com)-The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has patented the bio-urine produced by the administration of Kampar district, Riau province, through the Food and Energy Self-Sufficient Household Program (RTMPE).

"The bio-urine was derived from cow manure processed into fertilizer," the LIPI team leader, Professor Bambang Subiyanto, said here on Monday.

He affirmed that LIPI strongly supports the national research priority programs in the fields of food and post-genomic farming molecular health, biodiversity-based medicine, and biotechnology. This includes the production of bio-urine in the form of solid and liquid fertilizers by the Kampar district administration through the RTMPE.

"We exactly measure all the substances specified in the RTMPE to get quality bio-urine. These include the area of land, the number of livestock, and the number of chili, onions and vegetables to plant, which help calculate the economic value and effectiveness of bio-urine," Subiyanto explained.

Moreover, the head of administration of Kampar district, Noer Jeffery, stated that the administration was very serious about patenting the solid and liquid fertilizer products and the biogas derived from cow manure.

The process of converting cow urine into bio-urine and cow manure into biogas needs Rp15 million in funding, he added.

Jeffery pointed out that six cows produce 500 to 1,000 liters of urine, which can then be processed into bio-urine. It is sold at Rp15,000 per liter.

The process of converting cow urine into bio-urine takes 14 days. In the first eight days, it is fermented to remove all toxins, following which the urine is kept in a container and mixed with various types of spices. These spices include ginger, turmeric, Javanese ginger, and others.

After allowing the concoction to settle for three days, it is filtered into a second drum and then allowed to settle for three more days. The bio-urine is now ready for use and sale.

Furthermore, the bio-urine product of the RTMPE, he noted, will be marketed to replace chemical fertilizers that damage the fertility of the soil.

According to Jeffery, the bio-urine and organic fertilizer derived from cow manure will make the soil fertile without poisoning it and the plants.(ant)
